Default Power Outage?

Due to high winds yesterday we lost power for seven hours. What does everyone here do when the power goes out and customers have clothes in the machines?

Luckily no one was here at the time but I'm thinking of getting a small generator for emergencies. At least I could then finish a load in a top loader and rig up a plug on a dryer to get my customers and clothes on their way.

I myself took out insurance for this.

How long was your store down for?

I would have given those customers free wash and dry if they gotten caught up in this downage ...

If I'm close by i go to the store. I refund everybody and help some get their clothes out of washer. Since i am a multi store owner. I offer to go to another of my locations and start machines in stead of refunding. If not close i take names for refunds on phone. Another reason i try to go to location is to shut off breakers. When power comes on it can damage VFD's and three phase machines.

I had this situation a few weeks ago due to a lightning strike across the street that killed a transformer (in spectacular fashion). Due to the rain I only had 3-4 customers in the store, so I offered to keep their clothes overnight (as I closed early) and had my attendant wash/dry/fold their clothes in the morning for no charge. They all really liked that and it created a lot of goodwill there. Power was restored overnight

I like the way you handled it. That will be our new policy. I'll bring my generator from home so I can run at least one washer or dryer and get started while I wait for the power to come back on.

What would be a reasonable amount of time to wait for the power to come back before making the offer?
