Default Rules Sign

Awhile back there was some discussion about what rules should be posted. I think the consensus was that everything concievable that could be a problem should be listed. I'm designing a sign to hang just inside the door over my washers, and I've got the following rules so far:

-No children allowed in laundry carts or on folding tables
-Do not reach into dryer before drum stops turning
-No running
-Do not take laundry carts out of the building
-Do not force washer doors open; green light must be
on before door will open
-No horseplay
-Do not leave children unattended

I'm sure I'm leaving things out. Does anyone have suggestions for more rules? Thanks.

who is going to read your signs?

Try this one, don't matter if they read it, you cover your ass, that is what it is all about.

This laundromat is self service, use of all machines is at your own risk. Children need to be supervised at all times around this working equipment that could be dangerous to them.
You are responsible to watch your clothes and childeren.

In defense of Lindsey, I am also designing a master "rule" sign for the main wall of the store that will cover EVERYTHING in addition to installing 30 other little annoyers throughout the store.

I am convinced in todays world you have to be careful about these things. I don't expect anyone to read it.

You could add the following:
  • Do not sit on the Table.
  • Remove your clothes from the Machine as soon as it is done.
  • Clothes left in the Washer will be removed by the Attendant
  • No Smoking
  • No Rubber Back Rugs in the Washer or Dryer

The minute any signs read "Do Not......" I stop reading after the first two lines of this. But when the stores are unattended I see the point with the signs. I would strategically place each sign. I would put washer instructions directly on the washer as well as the dryer instructions, suggestions and rules so each customer would view these instruction during the initial use of either machine. Any social rules place on the changers, soap machines and near the doors. They may not read these signs but the more you have the better off you are. THese type of signs should be small in size, strategically placed on the machines, in English and Spanish. You cover your ass, without making your place tacky looking with signs.

Thanks for these suggestions. I can make nice signs on my computer, but they come out on paper. Is there a good way to laminate them and attach them to machines and other objects?

Talk about tacky.

I am a firm believer in professional signs.

I may post my rough draft, but it won't be done for a month or so.

2 of my favorite signs!

The first is the one in the airliner emergency row seating which says

"Please let the attendants know if you cannot read or understand English. You must be able to read and understand English to sit in an exit row"

The second was one they installed in some of the fighter jets in the 60's. The sign was installed on the canopy, and gave the 7 step procedure to follow in order to use the ejection seat. Step 4 was to release and blow off the canopy. Good luck figuring out steps 5 to 7!!!

I do tend towards minimal signage, but agree that it does help to keep you covered in the event of an emergency.
