I use a thin type food thermonitor and stick it in the top elbow of the exhaust. You may have to drill a hole, or if lucky, take out a screw. Run the dryer empty, watch the temp from behind. I have not check one for about 10 years, but it is fun the first few times.

I will recommend having a load in the dryer. The dryer will heat up so fast without a load and depending on the response time of the thermometer you are using you will see a very high temperature. You should be checking when the thermostat trips. A digitial wll react quicker and tend to read higher then a snap, bulb thermostat. The new thermister type are quicker. The trick is to find the right sensor and fudge factor to determine if it is all ok. But in reality you are not looking a exact temperature you are making sure the unit heat but does not over heat . The duct termperature will be somewhat lower then inside the dryer. I would say see if the termperature peaks about 180-210 on high and resets about 160 on bulb type or 180 on thermistor type it is probably ok. Every dryer type is different.
