View Full Version : Standard Changer problem

I have 2 Standard 500E change machines. One of them (too often) takes in a $10 bill and reads and dispenses as if it were a $5 bill. The audit procedure confirms that the acceptor read the bill as a $5 bill. Security for the $5 was originally set to 3, then changed to 4, 5, 6, and then 7. At 6 the problem occurred 3 times in 2 days. The sensors were cleaned and a cal card was run through the acceptor. Each time I increased the security for the $10 bill to make it one higher than the $5. But when the level reached 8 for the $10, bill acceptance was very poor, so I left both the $5 and $10 security level at 7. As far as I know all misreads were the newest version of the $10 bill. Since the levels were set to 7 today, I don't know if this has solved the problem. Somehow I feel that this should not happen even at low security level settings.

I was told by Standard tech support that the acceptor first looks to see if a bill is a $1 bill. If it is, then checking stops, and the machine pays out one dollar. If the bill is not a $1, then it looks to see if it is a $5 bill. If so, it pays out, etc on through $10 and $20. Tech support told me that the security level should be set to increase as the bill denomination increases. (Ex: $1 = 5, $5 = 6 $10 = 7 $20 = 8). Is this problem a software glitch, or an acceptor malfunction? Both of my 500Es have up-to-date software.

You have a better problem than mine, I have 2 $5 bills in my wallet that paid out $10. Standard changer as well, but in Can dollars. I have the most current chips as well. I wasn't aware of how the machine detects bills, ie lower to higher denominations. I will increase security settings tomorrow, before all of coinwash followers find my mat!

Winston, How up to date is your chip?

Did you get it when the new $10 came out? If so there have been several modifications to the chip since then.

I had to order another updated chip several months after I got the first one because it was occasionally misreading the new $10.

Also check your software version and the # on your chip and call Standard to see if it is the latest version of the chip.

I have that problem too, I also kept my $5 bill (only one so far)

But last week I changed out the acceptor for a series 600.

You reminded me to take that $5 bill in to check it.
(I did check it against my other two changers, and it worked properly)

(perhaps it has something to do with the increased value of the Canadian dollar :-)

I have two machines as well. One will pay $5 on a new( colored) ten, but only some of the time. I just put a sign up to use the other side. I don't have much luck getting intermitent problems on those changers fixed at the local tech shop.

My software version is 4.83 (for the 500E). The current version is 4.86. Both are up to date as far as "new" bills. Tech support said the newer versions did not address the incorrect payout for the new $10 bills. They suggested increasing the security level for the $5 bills. With both $5 and $10 levels at 7, there was poor acceptance of both denominations, even after cleaning the sensors and "calibrating" the machine. So I disabled the $10 acceptance and now the changer only tales $1 and $5 bills (security level 5). I think I'll live with this until the newest $5 bills are released next year. Then I'll upgrade software. For my store this will work (I think) because I have 2 other changers that take $1, $5 and $10 bills. Thanks for the input. But I'm still puzzled as to why one of my 500E machines works perfectly, and the other one doesn't.

With the new $5 bill coming out in early February I’d wait until the software is out for the new $5 bill www.moneyfactory.gov/newmoney/main.cfm/currency/new5 If your getting an incorrect payout I don’t think a software change is going to help. You’re going to have to send it in for repair, you’ve got a weak sensor. The software upgrades for the new $5 bill will be out for the Mars, Pyramid, and Standard validators in early January. Hamilton already has released there upgrade for the XE & STA validators. This is a very easy EPROM chip change, I’ve done a number of them already. The HVX is not upgradeable to accept the new currency.
