Catch22

I have been thinking of opening a laundromat that has been close for quite sometime now and just haven't. I REALLY believe I can open it and turn it around, but am scared about taking the leap of faith and diving into the business with such a good job right now. The previous owners didnt take care of the place from the sounds of things and never wanted to put any real time or effort into running it. A lady owned it and from the sounds of things she would just come in and sit around smoking cigarettes all day and let the machines fall apart, and Im sure her C.S. wasn't the best in the world either though I didnt know her personally so I shouldnt judge.
I guess my question is....Was any of you in a GOOD job when you left to become a owner of your own mat, i mean, great job, pay, benefits, retirement, all that??
I really dont have much to lose though. I just started working for another company after being laid off permanately due to a plant closing. I worked for Maytag and after Whirlpool bought them out they shut our doors and I, along with 2000 or so other workers were forced to make some changes. I had 13 yrs. in the washer and dryer business so I feel I have some idea of how they work and Im extremely handy so I wouldnt be scared about the maintenance part of it.
I've got a lot of homework to do before I decide one way or the other. I know the town is big enough and honestly believe theres not that many mats around but am going to check it out.
Whats the best part of owning a mat? Worst? I love talking with people so I would love that part of it...the customer service....If you could go back to your old job and resume working for someone else would you? I think that would be the absolute BEST part of owning your own business, going in and opening YOUR own place of a morning!! I know its not all rosey Im sure but if you could lend me a little advice I would really appreciate it.
Thanks so much!! Brad C.
