View Full Version : Coin-Block feature for newer Dexters

I was wondering if Dexter owners out there with newer frontloaders have found the coin-block feature to be a valuble feature or a hindrance. The coin-block feature prevents coins from being accepted unless the door is locked. It's supposed to be a safety feature, but sometimes causes confusion in my partially attended mat. It's fairly simple to remove the feature from the coin acceptor mech. I've done it on one machine already. Do you think that without this feature it opens some liability issues ?

We have that feature on our SpeedQueen Front Loaders. I would say we have people 2 or 3 times a week have a problem with it. I actually dont see it to be that huge of a saftey feature then again I dont see it being worth the time to remove.
I also have them on the speed queen machines and once in a while someone can't figure it out.
I would not remove or alter the safety mechanisms on any machine.

Lets see, You bypass a installed safety feature, A liability issue?? Just a little!
However the problem it is trying to fix is such a long shot that I might risk it. I also believe but I could be wrong that removing it will effect your warrenty.

EJ333,
I agree with the others that defeating the coin blocking function would likely leave one open to a liability suit (or void warranty). However, I have repeatedly encountered the same problem as you. At least once every 2 weeks, a new customer leaves a note on any of several of the Dexters complaining that the machine won't accept coins. This despite the printed instructions on the manufactuere's decal and special signs I made and posted up near the coin boxes for each machine. With a small unattended store, having a machine placed OOO on a busy weekend day is quite an annoyance.
It also turned out last week that there truly was a problem with one of the Dexters, and I had to replace the coin blocking solenoid assembly. However, it took 2 days to get the part and have it installed - during that time, the machine was down. In such a situation, I would gladly be willing to bypass the coin blocking function for a day or two. Could you share your technique for disabling this function - either on this thread or by sending me a PM?
Thanks in advance...
Walter

I was told the reason for them was a lawsuit on Dexter Washers. We have all Dexters in our stores and have had very few complaints. Just close the door before adding coins
I have the coin blockers also.
With my Brother label printer I just printed a label that says:
CLOSE AND LOCK DOOR
BEFORE INSERTING QUARTERS
And put it right by the quarter slot. No more problems.

You are lucky to have customers that can READ~
I have taken all of them out, especially since the washer won't start until the door is locked. On the average, I used to get 3-5 "request for service" when I had them on. The newest Dexter washers , the once with STOP button, don't have those anyway! So I didn't think it was THAT big of a deal!

There is a coin block disable kit from dexter. It may be "pre lawsuit" though. I disabled the SQ one for the same reasons. Customers want to test the coin mech before commiting to a wash. So they try a quarter or two in it, some take it down to the last one. If a kid get put in it and it starts, you will have plenty of time to put the coin mech back in working shape, or just leave one wire off and say vibration must have loosen it. Then sue the parents for child neglect. You can tell I am sick of this BS, no? :)
Went to a Dexter Service School in Atlanta yesterday - and that feature was discontinued - due to complaints. The new washers do not have it. they produced those washers for 3 years - but no more

With the coin blocking solenoid removed, the washer accepts coins and counts down.
If the door is still open when the last coin is inserted, the display changes from "insert coins" to "time remaining" ...
Now the strange part...
As soon as the door is closed and locked, it beeps as if end-of-cycle and the display returns to "insert coins". The money is gone and nothing moved (timer, water, drain, motor - nothing moved)
I'll try a few other things and come back with more info
