My "Standard" changer occasionally gives out the wrong change.
Every once in a while when my patrons put in $10.oo they say they only get back $5.00 in change.

Of course I've heard of this problem from time to time but is this common?

Is there a fix?

yes, call standard changer. they'll send you a new updated ship for $30. This will fix your problem.

depend on your case,

1) if happend only NEW $10 bill, then order replacement computer chip (around $30..)

2) if happend old $10 bill, then half of your hoper not functioning properly...maybe need to check program set-up, or fix bad hoper, what happens is normally coin dispenses 50% from right side of hoper and another 50% from left side of hoper.

I had the same problem with 2 different Standard Changers. The rep at Standard told me that the problem was caused by having the security settings too low for the $5 bill. It works like this: The bill is examined to see if it is a $1, if not, then is it a $5? If so $5 is paid out. If not a $5, then is it a $10? and so on. I had my security settings at 3, 3, 4 for $1, $5, and $10. With the low number for $5's, it was too easy to mistake a $10 for a $5. Now the settings are 3, 4, 4.... No further problem. (I disabled the $20 acceptance. Upgrade for new $10's was done when they were introduced).
