I found some tyvek type tags. They are not specifically designated for laundry.
I'm thinking of tying customers names onto mesh bags, sending them through the wash and then attaching them to the dryer door while their load dries singly.
Does that make sense?
This is for fireman service--not high-end delicates/career people with 1,000 outfits.

It does not make sense to send a wire/paper tag thru a washer!
I have seen web sites with plastic marker type things, something you could toss in mesh bag and not have it ruin anything. This would be an easy way to track customers.

My nearest forest fire has been growing.
in the last week or so I had 2-4 WDF firefighters per day so I just used the same paper tags I use for all my WDF. Cleaner's supply called them DC Tags, I got the triplicate ones. The tear off numbered tag slides into someplace near the coin slot or door depending on the machine and follows the load start to finish. I haven't tried ganging up firefighters socks, tshirts, jeans, etc in mesh bags though. If I did I think I would permanent marker letters on the bags, and on clothespins. The paper tag would attach to the lettered clothespin corresponding to the mesh bag, just my thought.
Today the Forest Service called and moved the command post to the community center, and wants 125-150# front line fire resisitant uniforms daily (in bulk - they issue daily to front line firerfighters) plus 60-80 # personal laundry ( I figure 10 -15 people )
What did you finally decide for washing the smoky sooty Aramid firefighter uniforms ("wash hot, rinse well, dry medium" says the labels)? I'm trying oxyclean, borax and gain right now, with vinegar in the rinse. Thursday I'll go to walmart and get something unscented in case the gain perfume remains flammable. I dont want to use restaurant or oil field type procedure on front line firefighters.

When I was doing WDF for the Fire Fighters I got tags from Badger Tag & Label http://www.badgertag.com/tags-selfsealing.html.
Tell them you saw their link on Coinwash.com
These tags are self-sealing laminating tags. The laminating makes the tags waterproof.
We put these tags on the laundry bags with nylon wire ties. These tags worked well and washed well.

We use colored magnets to track the loads. 3 Washers of the same order 3 blue magnets and the slip gets a blue one on it behind the counter. When it gets moved to the dryer, the magnets go too. They don't stick to the stainless steel so we sit them on top of those.
