I have now removed a Horizon from my laundry in an effort to keep one of them as a spare for a "quick" swap in the event of a broken machine.

I have had to seriously rebuild one of them and another has had reoccurring errors. These machines are not easily serviced folks! They really need to be taken apart and spread out.

I opened this one up last night and discovered one of the 4 shocks has completely come apart (as in a top and bottom, separated)...obviously accounting for the clanking noise and jumping around.

For those of you who don't know, the horizon drum lies solely on 4 shocks, one at each corner.

I managed to put the thing back together and the machine now works, not so badly.

The trouble is it is still a little rocky when it goes into a spin, definitely too much "off balance" effect.

I will get the replacement shocks soon, but I wonder if there may have been a bearing problem that caused the machine to jump its shock in the first place.

Any ideas from experience as I hate to take it apart, replace the shocks and solved only the symptoms and not the cause.

Check the drum, does it have any play in it. Does it make noise in spin. If not it is probably ok. It is also a good idea to replace the shocks in pairs or all of them at once because of differences in tension between new and old ones, but that is up to you.

I had six horizons and found them to be plauged with a control panel problem, that is the buttons wear out in 3 to 6 months, requiring the entire assembly to be replaced (approx. $500 each). I sold them to the first reasonable offer. I must say when they were running they did a heck of a nice job washing and were among my most popular machines.

Andy, how long ago was this ? (that you had control panel problems with your Horizons?)

I'm wondering if there is a new generation that has addressed the problem, like with the Neptunes.

I believe my machines were mfg. in 1998 or 1999. I did have problems with the replacement units as well. I went through 18 or 20 of these things all on warrenty, when that expired I have to say speed queen was nice enough to send me some free replacements. Speed Queen tech support has been very responsive on most occasions.
