Hi,

I am looking at an absentee run store, I notice as I was sitting in the parking lot to get an idea on how there business was doing that they had a help wanted sign. Would it be wrong of me to get a job there while I am interested in buying the place?

why on earth would that be wrong?

do you have time to work there while you continue to do research?

I think it is a great idea, you will learn more about the biz than most new buyers. Plus know about the mat for sale. Maybe even talk to the owner, saying you had thought about buying a mat. You never know.

When I was shopping for a store, I spent a week working part-time in a store I was considering. I had already negotiated a purchase agreement with the owner, and this was done with his full knowlege and consent. I wanted to learn the business and get to know the operational details. I also wanted to get to know the other employees, as I expected to hire them.

I was not paid for the time I worked.

In the end, I did not buy that store, but it was a very helpful learning experience anyway. I did buy a formerly-unattended store. I then hired attendants and converted it to attended operation. The "training" I received from the owner of the store I didn't buy turned out to be very helpful.

I wish I had extra time so that I could work in my competitors store. :-)

Sounds like you have a good business drive and determination. Do it.
