I am considering leasing a space for a new laundromat. Presently the space has wall to wall carpet that is brand new and matches the decor very well. My question is if this will be practical for a laundry of am I better off ripping it out and installing ceramic or vinyl?

I don't know what the other posts say but my husband and I went laundromat lookin' a few months ago. One busy mat had indoor/outdoor type carpet (grey-blue actually).

The machines were all meticulously clean and in working order!

But the store STUNK big time!!! I mean in the most revolting way.

The manager was in there and gave us lots of helpful hints. Very nice. We both assumed that the stench was from the carpet and years of spills here and there. Also, there were two homeowner type couches in there that probably added to the odor too.

(By the way, she raved about the carpet being a liability saver with slips, etc. But what about MOLD growing in there and making people sick!!!!)

I still remember that smell and there was no reason other than that for it that I can think of...

Seems to me that besides retaining moisture and smelling like ass, w/ traffic patterns being exactly the same day after day that in a short time parts of it would look brand new while others looked 10 yrs old.

We have had carpet in our mat for 30years and our program is as follows. We have it professionally cleaned monthly, and vacumed and spot cleaned daily, and then we replace and paint the mat ever 1.5 years. The higher traffic volume areas are in tile but the thing is customers do love carpet. If your are looking for a cheap flooring option it is not carpet. On average it costs me about $150 per month for cleaning and depreciation.

We have carpet in the front of our dryers but tile in the rest of the store. It works well for us too but you gotta keep it clean. Seems kinds nice standing and folding on carpet

Tiles only in my stores, rental houses,my home.
Maytag dealers built a lot "just like home" laundromats with carpet a few years ago, most of them changed to tiles in first 3 years.I saw 2 stores had white carpet, what were they thinking....
