Short to Long cycle

I was wondering if you can put a long cycle timer in a short cycle machine? Have a SQ top that I want to use at home, but convert it to a long cycle machine, is this possible?

Buy a $30's timer,I bought some SQ top loaders from a school once,all had long timer,I had to change all to short cycle timer.
