How do you calculate, to compare operating cost of electric verese gas dryers? With gas prices as high, will electric run cheaper.

Just kidding man... I think I know the answer, but this will be an interesting thread regardless. Especialy in light of the recently stratospheric gas prices.

Are there commercial size electric dryers? I was told NO when askign about them a couple years ago. Maybe they are made and nobody buys them. I think gas is far more economicaly and faster for laundry mat dryers.

pete, I've never heard of any, but I've never looked either. Surely there are. There has to be municipalities that don't have gas...

I have seen electric OPL dyers but never coin-op for people with out natural gas there is propane. But gas is used to produce alot of electricity so I can't imagine it is cheaper. We had a gas dryer in our last house and they did give comparisons as to how much cheaper it was than gas but now you just about only see electric dyers for homes.

Yes Shirley, there is Propane for those without Natural Gas pipelines.
I recently paid $1.515 / gallon for Propane, nearly $400 for 3 or 4 weeks worth.
with the historical price difference between gas and electric I wouldn't expect large scale electric dryers to sell very well. Lately that might not be as true so perhaps we'll see some soon?

I seem to remember that the SQ 30 EG machines were part of a family of machines that could be ordered with natural gas, propane, electric, or even steam heat. I would not be suprised to find some older electric heated driers in Washington State, since electricity was VERY cheap in the past. The steam heated driers would likely be used in hospitals and other facilities that have steam plants.
