This morning tore into my speedqueen toploader, replacing the drive hub/seal, along with the bearing, and while I had it tore down, the brake pads and belt, per Pete's suggestion.

Took me about 3.5 hours - would have been faster had my vent-cleaning guy not been there, talking my ear off while I'm trying to figure out exactly how the thing goes together.

Now after doing that I'm not afraid of anything a toploader can throw at me. Pretty simple beasts.

Thanks to coinwash for the helpful hints and advice on just what parts/tools were and were not needed.

I don;t remember saying to replace the belts and pads, but I always do on my top rebuilds. I replace the water pump and water valve for good measure also to end up with a new rebuilt washer that hopefully will not give me trouble for a few years... you did Ok for the first time, I spent at least that on my first one, it may have been 3.5 DAYS!.

It was in an old thread that you had commented "do the pads and belt then you've got a nice rebuild job."

Would have been longer had I not absolutely lucked out and had a torx bit to take off the pump, so I could replace the belt. In any case I'm glad it went ok. The only embarrassing part was when I realized that the new 'friction ring' I'd bought had nothing to do with the brake assembly. Gee it sounded like it was part of a braking system to me :)
