Someone else here in laundryland has a currency bill to bill changer. We need some help

We have the standard model with a cashcode validator. Last weekend it went out 6 times. Good bills were loaded and the bills that were being accepted were also good. However the six times the machine went out it had accepted a 20 and dispensed 2 or 3 fives then immediately went out. I cleaned the rollers with alcohol Friday night when it had gone out the first time. Then it went out 2x Sat and 2x Sun all with the same problem. Sunday night I again cleaned the rollers with alcohol and there has been no problems since, however the usage of the machine is down from this period. Friday Sat and Sunday usage may dispense around 8500 notes. Late Sunday to the following Friday is minimal usage. I cannot believe that the machine cannot keep up with the demand but I am starting to think otherwise. Or something is very wrong. It should be much more dependable being only 6 mos old. Any ideas or anyone with similiar problems?

Kitty -
I have the same machine, and I admit that this thing drives me crazy. I bought it so that I wouldn't have to leave a lot of change with my attendants. However, it will run fine for a week, then jam 5 times in a row.

The first thing is to use only good quality bills. You must sort out heavily worn bills. Preferably, bills are only slightly used, with no rips or tears, and some stiffness left.

Second, check your bill hopper for the bills you dispense. There should be 2 springs inside pushing the bills against the feed rollersl If there is only one, in the middle, call standard and ask them to send a replacement hopper with 2 springs. This makes a huge difference.

Finally, your rollers are clean, but may need adjustment. This is tricky and you can mess it up as easily as you can fix it. If the first two items above don't fix your problem, then you may need to take the machine OTS while you send this back for adjustment.

I don't get it.

Why have a bill-to-bill changer?

I am unattended. The customer brings money and spends some of it in my mat (hopefully, most of it). If he/she goes home with a pocketful of quarters, so what?

The next time around, he/she will have smaller bills to use.

Why spend the money on a bill changer? Why allow attendants to break down large bills? Why have attendants give refunds or make change or handle money for any reason other then Wash and Fold (and treat it as a separate cash drawer operation from non drop-off)?

Convenience. Period. I suppose you could train the customer to change their habits, but it is yet another perk for doing business with us.

The bill to bill is a great tool, when working correctly. As I said the unit goes through 8500+ notes per week. That is alot of change the attendant would need to be acounting for. We used to give out a few hundred bucks per attendant but they could not access new change during their shift during the weekends, nor keep up with the funds.... The nearby stores got tired of the attendants bugging them for change, as they should have. There is a petty cash drawer for emergencies that is audited everytime one of us goes to the store. It is part of BD's philosophy to be very customer friendly and it seems to do him well to be this way. Customers appreciates conveniences in todays busy world, it lessens the grief of coming into a business that they must patronize each and every week by doing something they hate to do.

Charlie,

I need more info one the string thing that I can print for Dave to check out when we go Thursday. I am counting quickly and will have no time to assist him in determining the problem that may possibly exsist with these strings and such. I am counting quick and taking a ride on a jet plane at 4pm to NYC.....could you email me those intructions. Thank you so much. Kitty

Kitty,

A friend with a bill-to-bill has been having weird problems with his relatively new machine this week as well. Could it be the sudden drop in temperature? His machine backs an exterior wall (behind the dryers).

He mixes old and new 5s.

We too mix old and new fives, however this week I had good "used fives" to place in the machine. I loaded 2300 bucks in 5's. It seemed every 450-500 bucks inserted for money to dispense did the machine malfunction. It has been wierd. I think there is something more to it then loading new and old fives or cleaning the rollers with alcohol. This unit should not malfinction at the level I saw this weekend or the time it has in the past.

8500 bills in a week ?
that means at least $10,000. a week ?
I find that hard to believe ! (no wait, impossible !)

Kitty - sPring, not sTring. When you place the bills in the feed hopper, you push back a plate which is spring loaded. In the machine, that spring loaded plate pushed the bills up against the feed rollers.

Look at the springs behind the plate. If there is one spring, centered in the middle, call Standard and get another cash hopper with 2 springs.

The hopper with one spring creates a lot of misfeeds. I still get misfeeds irratically, but far fewer than I did with the other hopper. It never occurred to me that the hopper was the problem. Let me know what you find!!!

Howard - Its all about customer service and being better than the competition! That's why I also have an ATM and a payphone.
