Have 3 SQ tumblers which will only run with a light load. Is the motor bearings going out causing it not to handle the weight? The dryers are old so I don't know if it is worth replacing the motors or not. How much longer do you think they will run like this before not running at all?

Are you asking us to be psychic. Next thing you'll ask us is what the lotto #'s will be.

Ok, sorry!!!!

It is obvious that the motor is on its last leg, you may want to replace the start cap but really it may just be time to replace the motor or junk the dryer.

A Starting cap is specifically designs for a.c. operation which
help to start the motor by providing a leading current to the auxillary winding. The capacitor is not permanently connected to the winding of the motor and is switched off after starting.

I would also look at extremely worn belts and/or chain sprockets first.

In my 30 yrs, I have always seen bad capacitors prevent a motor from starting even when dryer is empty.

If you try everything, still doesn't work right, just replace the motor,SQ's motor is cheap,I will even replace the fan, pulley and the plate. It is pain to remove those old parts, cost about $150-200 for everything include the motor, how much is your time worth?Replace motor is much cheaper than replace dryer.A bad motor may cause fire in your store why take the risk?

.A bad motor may cause fire in your store why take the risk?

Really?? Is that because the bearings are shorting out?

If you have a bad dryer motor, anything can happen.
I saw a few dryers fire cause by weak motor ,airflow switch not working right, the gas burned the lint and drywall,I saw a motor had bad bearing ,it got so hot and overtemp switch didn't work, burned some lint around motor.SQ may have the cheapest dryer motor anyway. How much is your store or time worth?

I think like Ken does, becuase it always ends up being the motor anyway after I replace caps, bearings, switch, etc. Just as easy to swap out a new motor and be done with it. Or swap out the dryer.
There are some places that do sell used parts, I have seen the ads in the Journal. Still a litle risk, but you know what turns you need out of your dryers. I would consider a newer used motor for one of my very low turns dryers. .
