View Full Version : Counting small change

The most pain-in-the-ass work I do is to separate the nickels and dimes from the quarters after collecting the snack and soda income.
There must be a better way!
I have tried the coin sorters that you shake, and it is still a pain. Very little reward for the time spent!
Have any of you figured out a way to make this less of a chore?
(Card system people: I know, I know)).

Howard, hire a pain in the ass like me, and get my type to do it. :)
Don't you have the large coin sorters that seperate pennies, dimes, nickels and quarters? I count as much as 300 bucks, not all change, but it doesn't take that long with this type of sorter. You can do it.
One store we have a mechanical coin sorter that does wonders, accounts and prints a receipt. Wish it was the carrying type.
Whittenbach systems may have some older types of coin sorters that may assist you. I have the number at the store if your interested.

I sort out the quarters and count them. The rest of the crap I throw into a 5 gallon water bottle and maybe once a year take it to the bank and let them throw it in their counting machine.

It is the sorting that is the pain. Do you have a quick way of separating the denominations?

The best way is to use a high speed multi-sorting machine, like the Cummins 3000 or 6000. These, however, are very expensive new, and sell used on Ebay for about 700-1000 when they are available, which is not often. The next best way is to use a rail sorter, like the Brandt 1205. These can be purchased used on Ebay for $250 - $400. There are also several other machines, rail sorters, that occasionally show up on Ebay as well. These are best when you have enough coin to bag, rather than roll.
Coin counting/packaging machines will also offsort. This requires a multi-pass approach, but is very effective. Again, look on Ebay for your best deals. These machines are perfect when you also want to roll your coins, because they will count the correct number, slide them down a chute where you hold the wrapper (shotgun wrappers are easier to use than flat). My wife and I used to sit and roll coins once a month using the Scancoin 303, which is about $1200 new. You can fold the ends shut, or get a crimper, which rolls them over into a neat finished end.

When you use this style counter, you start with the big coins (size wize), and all the smaller coins are offsorted to a side tray. ypically, you start with quarter, run the nickels, then pennies, then dimes. Its very quick.
Again, check Ebay. There are always lots of coin sorters.
Don't bother with the $30 plastic machines, or most machines under $100. They are toys.
Just checking Ebay. Of course, if you just have a small quantity, the Nadex sorter is cheap and functional.

Please feel free to ask if you are thinking about a specific model. I kinda like this stuff! Currently I have a Cummins 6000, Cummins 3000, Glory CN-12, Scan Coin 303, Brandt 748 with crimper, and my baby, a Cummins 130XL autowrapper that I found on Ebay for $200, but cost me $350 to ship! I purchased all of this on Ebay or from internet sources. Mostly, I use the Cummins 6000 and the Cummins 130XL autowrapper.
My wife made me move the autowrapper out of the dining room. Sometimes I think she just doesn't understand!

Howard,
Do you have a Commerce Bank or other high service bank in your area?
They will let you use your sorter even if you are not a customer.

Charlie it sounds like you could start your own :eek::eek::eek::eek: store..
I see they have a bunch of coin sorters that sell for around $60-70. Royal Sovereign 2000 or 2002. Runs on 110v rather than battery. Still , you think the "old style" Nadex sorter is a better machine? I have a few soda machines and 1 candy machine I need to seperate coins. I have a coin counter and a bill counter.
I don't mind using a coin sorter for an end table either.
I lean towards picking up a Nadex in my next "office supply"
expenditure. Think that royal sovereign is really a POS?

The Nadex is a very simple, basic device, that for the money, won't breakdown, crack, or give other problems. It is limited in its capability, but will last pretty much forever in occasional use, and was designed for small commercial use. There's really not anything mechanical to break, other than the vibrator feed, and you can always feed manually. The sorting mechanism is simply preformed slotting. If you are talking under $1,000 a month, this is fine. If more, I'd move up a step or two.
I am not familiar with the Royal Sovereign other than what I see on Ebay, but I doubt that this has any kind of regular, commercial use quality. It is probably fine for the occasional personal user, but I would be shocked if it has any commercial durability.
Actually, I have sold some of my stuff on Ebay. I bought three pallets of equipment last year from a guy who got them from a bank. My goal was to sell enough to get the stuff I wanted for free. Most was pretty well used, but like a Gen 4 wasco, nothing a few parts and a little work couldn't get working pretty good. I still have about 6 currency counters that are in pretty good shape, that I will someday finish cleaning and sell on Ebay. I did also sell 3 of the Cummins 3000 coin sorters, which paid for everything I got and then some. The good quality stuff is built like a tank and designed for constant all day use. Glory and Cummins both make great stuff, but not cheap. Brandt is good as well, but the currency counters are more problematic. It was sold to DeLaRue, and is no longer made under the Brandt name, but some of the DelaRue stuff is identical. The DelaRue coin equipment is solid. Scan Coin is decent, but a different quality level. It is still fine stuff for most commercial purposes.
