Anyone here replaced bearings on a Wasco W124 or similar motor? What is involved, where do you get the bearings, what do they cost?

Kirby, I just pulled a motor out of w124 I am rebuilding and took it to local electric motor shop and had them replace the motor bearings. They supplied the bearings and only charged $85.00 for parts and labor. I was going to send it to Alley Electric in NY, the place you told me about and have them do it for $75.00 until I checked with the local place. I'm pretty sure Alley's price includes parts and labor

That sounds about right for Alley, and yes that is the total price. I have them coming to deliver me two cylinders next week as I have a pair of W124's that have bad main bearings. I just pulled a motor out a machine that was squealing and installed my spare. I was wondering if I should just give it to Alley to fix or do it myself. Do you know how much just the bearings cost for the motor and is it a big job or a fairly easy job to change them.

Just answered my own question on price, I see that Bee Smart sells the bearings for $21.

The question I still have is how hard a job is this and are there any tricks or gotchas to watch for.

Kirby, first remove the motor then get a magic marker and mark through the whole motor( It's goning come apart in three pieces) Then remove the 4 bolts and the ends should come off(use a rubber hammer to tap it if it doesn't) You need a small puller to remove the bearings and then use a deep well socket that matches up to the inside race of the bearings to gently tap on the new bearings. If they need to go up further up (past the socket) use a flat punch working around the inside race of the bearing till there in the same place as the old ones. It doesn't take long to change them. I help a friend do a 124 and they have an oval shaped washer, make sure you reinstall it. I've replaced many on Unimac Washers and the same motors are used on the 124s. You can pull the bearings and go to a local bearing co. and they will match them for you. I think I paid $18 for them and usally I picked up an extra set to keep on hand

Alley electric is excellent company for rewinds. ****
