What is the best way to drill out the lock on an EDS coin box? Finally lost a key. Fortunately, it is to only one box!

2.5 hours and a few tools..........

Tools:A good drill, some good drill bits,3 in one oil or any oil, hammer, junky screw driver.
oil will cool down the drill bit and helping the lock mech to drop when you drill through,so oil the 4 side and center.
I can get most box drill out in 10-30 mins, some longer. It depend on how rusty the lock.

cold chisel and a two pound hammer. Insert the chisel and start waling on it. (It's pretty noisy) Drilling is to time consuming and expensive.

I remember disscusion about the security of ESD boxes being poor, and could be opened by a big screwdriver pounded in and turned with vice grips. tales from the 'hood or truth I do not really know.

I have never had good luck getting them open. Last time the drill bit "caught" and the drill twisted in my hand and I swear I broke my finger. Good luck, make sure the health insurance bill is paid.

Rondo is right on track that is the way I did mine less than 5 min I had it done. Only thing most of the time you got to buy a new box and lock

I don't care about the coin box. I was in the process of replacing it and drop the key somewhere. I like the chisel idea. Do you just hammer on the lock part, the center?

I can confirmed that the ESD locks are poorly made. Few months ago, some @$#@ SOB did came by with a big sturdy screwdriver, pounded in and turned the ESD lock with vice grips or pipe wrench; the lock mechanism gave. With the lock broken, the ESD lock can be lock and unlock with a common screwdriver - the ignorant owner (ME) who couldn't insert the key waited a few days so he can get a replacement locks and also to drill out the defective lock. Meantime, the @$#@ SOB probably come back to take more $$. Over 10 washers and 10 dryers were hit in my unattended store. Since then, I replaced all my coinbox with Medeco locks.

BTW, I tried this method on another ESD lock and confirm that brute force does works - this is faster than drilling out the lock, and the coinbox wasn't even damaged.

I've had this problem a couple times myself. I've found that a "heat wrench" is the way to go. Be carefull to protect the surrounding area's.

Insert the chisel in the lock opening and pound away. Keep your eye on the chisel, hitting your hand is very painful.

The "pounding away" doesn't damage the coinbox /or the surrounding frame of the machine that is holding the coinbox in ?

Also, didn't realize one could buy the Lock separately from the Box ?

OK.

Tried the screwdrive, lock won - twice. They where old, crappy screwdrivers.

Had the hammer and chisel ready, but attempted the drill first.

Glad I did. Took less than 30 sec. Surprised the hell out of me, once the bit caught (and I was ready). 1/4" drill bit in my 11 amp hammer drill and I was in the coin box in no time flatt. Took longer to get the drill out and an extension cord! Did NOT use hammer setting.

Thanks for all the suggestions.
