Can anyone recommend a reliable, automated coin counter. I thought of using my wife and kids but then had second thoughts (he he).
Jeff
We bought a used one from a bank. It is a heavy duty machine not some plastic one that is going to keep breaking down on you. (The thing weighs a ton). We paid $500 for it. Money WELL spent. We have a contact that can get them from the banks when the banks do the upgrades.
The brand that we have is BRANDT

I think that most of us simply weigh the coins and take them to the bank in bulk. A pound of quarters is $20. My bank gave me some heavy duty plastic bags for them. I just use my fluff and fold scale, which is not legal for trade ;). But the bank has never complained, and if I am a little over then who cares, it is better than counting them.
As far as nickels and dimes go, I just throw them in a 5 gallon bucket. When it fills up I take it to the guy that owns the payphone outside my mat. He counts them for me and sends me a check.
I use a digital postal scale that weighs in grams, so much easier and quicker than a counter.

Without question the Cadilac of coin counters is Klop. I have 3 of them, one almost 30 years old and would give up my left arm before giving one of them up.

Are you wanting to seperate coins in bulk or count single denominations. I have a coin sorter, and a coin counter, which is used to help wrap coins. I bought both off :eek::eek::eek::eek:

I've bought several counters off Ebay. Klopp counters are well built, but not good for sorting, and not particularly fast. However, in terms of portable units, they are the best.
Cummins sorters are the best sorter/counters on the market. Simple design, very fast, but also expensive. If you can get a used 3000 or 6000, they are great machines.
There are usually some good Ebay deals on Brandt counter/sorters. These are no longer made, but they are pretty decent machines. Brandt has been purchased by DeLaRue. DeLaRue makes some very nice desktop counter sorters.
However, I would avoid any of the cheaper plastic counter/sorters currently on the market.

William - The bank will do the same thing with the Pennies, Nickels and dimes. You have to have a certain amount in the bags or the Federal Reserve will charge you (can not remember what the amount is, you could check with your bank). The bank should supply you with the bags for them just like they do with the Quarters. It is much better them counting them.

I use Klopp.
Reliable, fast enough, solid & heavy.
Bought used for $400. New cost $1150
It will sort any (US) coin, with the chute attachments.
Its all mechanical & electrical, so no computer boards to go out.
Dead simple to use.

How automated do you want? We have had good going with our Cummins 2000 sorter/counter for almost 2 years now & it is 6 times as fast as the Brandt we used to have. Also, it has a RS232 serial port that can interface with your computer. In other words, you can have it enter the individual amounts of each category directly into your database on your computer reliably. It also stops at the required amount of coins that your Bill Changer Audit tells you that you need to replenish your hoppers. The remaining amounts left in the final bags for the bank is easily taken off the digital readout.
I also have a Klopp counter that is older than I am, I took the crank arm off and hook up my cordless drill to the shaft-it speeds things up!
I also have a Cummins jet scan currency counter for the bills.
I rarley use the Klopp because my bank doesn't charge for loose change deposits. And if I were to count coins on a regular basis I would use a scale, quicker and easier. Get a counting scale if you are lazy, these can also be found on ebay as stated above.

Non-sorting electric Klopp here. Great machine. I only have to sort for the soap and soda vending, so I do it by hand.
