I am giving strong consideration toward purchasing the ADC 236 dryers and the install manual calls for a rear wall clearance of 12" miniumum but 24"+ is recommended. What issues if any maybe encountered if allow for just 18". I am slender.

I have 8 ADC stack units. The cases are about 36" from the back wall, and we needed every inch when it came to changing out the both the pillowblock and flange bearings on several units. (Took out the original Chinese bearings and put in Gold-Seals).
Perhaps you have the option of pushing them forward into the room when you need more maintenance space? I don't have that option.

Chuckels:
We set the new Alliance dryers 24" back - If i had to do it all over again, I would make it only 20" (maybe even 18") - because the aisle in front could REALLY have used the extra 4-6"
There's even room to pass another person right now.
Lots of room when removing drums & replacing/retightening bearing nuts/covers.
I wish i had the extra inches in front every day.
(FYI, Alliance had the same recommendation as ADC)

Now for the really absurd. We were forced by the county building dept. to leave 36'' space and a 36" exit at each end of the corridor to accomodate handicapped dryer repairmen.
Sometimes to qualify for extended warranties, you must follow manufacturers recommendations.

Glenn, I beleive that code is so that emergency response personal can take out the body on a strecher from behind the dryers.
I have from 3' to 24" behind various dryers at mats. Some of the problem is how the dryers are vented, and wether or not the vent pipes are "in" the crawl space. I have an old SQ stack that is almost impossible to work on becuase of the venting being in the way of the place you are supposed to stand to work on it. If you are really hard up for space, maybe flex pipe for gas and venting so you can move them in and out, if code allows you to install them with less than 36 in.

And don't forget the electric code. Even though I have 30" (way too much) behind my stackes, I was forced to relocate some of the gas piping because I didn't have adequate clearance from the electric panel. I was forced to relocate the washer panel for the same reason.
