Some of you may remember the incident I had in my mat where an elderly lady broke her arm while pushing clothing back into the dryer. As a follow up, I called my insurance company for an update. Well the case is still under investigation however we had a lengthy conversation about how to minimize liability. It appears that our best defense is to post signs. Signs for everything! According to my claims rep. I should post a sign similar to the signs you see next to a swimming pool, listing everything I can think of. Then every time I see someone do something dangerous, I should update this sign with the new activity. Some examples were:

No running
No jumping
No skating
No scooters
Do not place your children in laundry carts, on counters, tables or on machines
Do not place your children inside any machine
Do not place any body parts into a moving machine
Do not place children inside of trashcans
Caution coffee is hot
Caution hot water in the washers is hot
Caution wet floors are slippery

Truly I feel like these signs are somewhat ridicules, however this is what they are recommending. What do you folks think? Do you have these sorts of signs in your mat?
What rules, regs or cautions am I missing?

I do have signs stating:

No Running
No Sitting on Tables
No children in carts

I should probably put signs up for all the other things as well. lol

Yup, that's right. As I always say, the signs are for OUR PROTECTION, not because anybody will read them. Early on in our laundromat career we lost a case in small claims court because we didn't have a sign that we weren't responsible for stains on clothes, etc.
So when people talk about not having signs up because they look tacky, or no one reads them, I just chalk this up to inexperience....sooner or later they'll wish they'd posted that sign

And if you think having all those signs is a pain, try doing business in a place where every sign you put up in english, must be accompanied by a sign that is in french, and the letters of the french sign must be twice the height of the english sign.

How about just one sign that says:

DO NOT DO ANYTHING THAT WOULD RESULT IN AN INJURY OR DEATH TO YOURSELF OR ANYONE ELSE.

I was thinking about one that says:

Enter at your own risk, wash at your own risk, dry at your own risk.

I have been lucky though. Only had one accident. Little boy said he stuck his arm in a front loader that had some time left on it, gave it a spin and the machine came on. I talked to my repair man and he said there was no way that could have happened.

The mother told me about it and asked if I would help pay the medical bills. She was a good customer and very nice about it so I said bring me the bill and we will talk about it. I asked her a couple of times to bring me the bill, but she never did. I figure the boy confessed that it did not happen the way he said so she let the matter drop. She is still a good customer.

My insurance premiums run me about $1800 per year.
I paid $500 to form an LLC
I pay $800 in corporate taxes to the state annually
I pay an accountant additional $600 a year to file the corporate taxes.
I need to go buy signs and mount them on the wall.
And now I am being told that we need a separate shut off switch for each machine.

All this to protect ME from some idiot walking into my mat and doing something stupid like placing a kid in a machine and turning it on. Then they can contend, OH I did not know I was not suppose to place a kid in the machine, I wanted to turn it off but didn’t see a switch. I am emotionally distressed and need a cool million to calm me down. Not to mention the child, the medical bills, the distress to the child and parents. Gee, it’s nice to live in a society where someone else can be held financially responsible for my stupidity.

Any installation of a machine in a commercial/industrial application must have a electrical disconnect within sight. In most cases for a coin laundry this disconnect is the circuit breaker panel mounted at the end of the bulkhead. In a nutshell you can't have your individual breakers in your back room, or if you do you must duplicate them nearer the machines(within sight).

I think I got it....In my one mat my employee came up with this one...It has been up for about 2 years now...

" IF YOUR NOT DOING YOUR LAUNDRY...WHY ARE YOU HERE? "

Some serious responses from my customers would include

"I'm getting a soda... using the ATM... picking up/dropping off my fluff and fold....playing the aracade games.....checking out the snack machines".....However, anyone else is told to move on and OUT!
