IT doesn't take a rocket scientist to be a mat attendant. You will want to recruit the type that will be satisfied with the pay, hours and duties. We usually recruited people for part time shifts. The full time shift 8-4 M-F people were retained because they received some sort of benefits and they received incentives for wash dry and fold serivices.

All employees received a yearly christmas bonus at least 2x pay. I suggest it be merit based. All employees received a weeks paid vacation after 1 year of service. Full time employees also received sick days and holiday paid time off as well.

Treat the employees well and most the time they will be loyal and dependable

Joy, I have no mats of my own, as of todays date. I am a former busimess manager of a multi mat business. I was in charge of over 20 employees and many of these employees retained thier services for many many years. As an an employee I assisited in definining ways to retain employees.
some people like their jobs, those who do you want to try and keep them entertained with the idea to work for you.

what is min wage now?: For 6 an hour they should be kissing you feet. where can they make that kind of easy money? Keep hire untill you get someone who appreciates the job.

I have been extremely lucky with the two ladies that I have. They have been with the mat for 10 years. Both are in mid seventies, they do this to have people to talk to and something to do, not the money.

I've about had it with high school kid employees. They stay - but don't do anything. Most have no work ethic. And expect more money (a raise) because they think they are doing their job. I explain to them that doing your job well and even going above and beyond is what brings raises.
I have noticed employee's like being involved - ask them questions like they are a part of the business (which they are). Even questions you don't care about - make them feel important. "what do you think about putting this thing here?" "should we put a sign here, or here?" "what kind of customer do you see using this type of washer?" "should we paint this blue?"
You would be amazed at how their input actually continues and their work ethic improves. I only pay 6 to 7 and hour and am one of the lowest in my competitive circle.
I've put help wanted signs in my mat. But when I fire them - I've lost a customer. Putting an add in the newpaper costs over $250 for three days.
Where does everyone else find them??
