View Full Version : What do you do with old washers & dryers that still work?
I was thinking of selling them or giving them to a friend that owns an apartment complex..
What do you usually do with them, just toss them or something constructive ?
I have done all of the above with the exception of an auction. You have to look at the big picture, what are these machines worth realistically, if you have storage available and time to move them then ok store them somewhere and sell em at will. The best scenario would be to sell them before the un-install process but this is not always possible. I choose to sell what I can before the un-install and scrap or give away the remainder. I think most times you fooling yourself thinking you're sitting on a small fortune when you are really sitting on scrap.
The guy that installs the new machines takes them. (one stop shopping)

Salvage the useful parts, set out back for six months until the scrap metal man comes and takes them away.

Where is sell them back when you get new equipment. Obviously you won't get much, but $50 a machine can add up if you're replacing alot of them.

Scrap them.
Any working washers that are placed in your market area is a potential for you losing customers.
My parents live in Georgia half the year and this is how they got their washer. The local mat that they used was getting new washers and the owner offered one to my dad if he hauled it away. Dad hauled it to his garage and has never been back to the mat since.
What if your competitor gets his hands on a few and now has little investment and can keep charging 75 cents a load, where you now have the cost of the new washers to deal with.
Just something to think about.
Now if you can be guaranteed that the equipment will be sold outside of your market area, then get what you can.

I put an add in the paper, sell the used tops for $50, I sell as many as I get takers, strip what parts I think I may (or may not need) and scrap the rest.

If you have several call a charity with an outlet far enough away that the buyer will not be a customer. Donate them using full value for deduction on the dreaded taxes. Everyone win except the mat owner in the area you donated.
