one of SQ stack dryer(computerized with big buttons approx. 10 years old - don't have the model number handy) is acting flacky - no heat sometimes. It would run for days without problem and then no heat. I will start it up again, would work fine, then no heat.

So far, I have:

1) replaced the screen
2) closed shut the air flow vent from the back.
3) removed the exhaust to isolate any back air flow issue.
4) have replaced the QDK - just incase.
5) swapped out the computer board.

It's not overheating. It could be sitting for hours then turn it on and no heat. Turn it off and turn on and heat.

What else could it be?

I have no solutions,
but I share your pain,
as soon as I find a few extra bucks, (and get off my ass) they're LANDFILL !

(let my repair guy find another way to put his kids through college !)

I've had two intermittent problems similar to what you describe.

One was the thermostat, and the other was the RAM.

There is a metal grate in the back of the dryer near the top. If that gets clogged with lint, it may act like you are describing. Is it a glo bar or a spark? I addition chec the damper switch and adjust it properly. Make sure when it is running and heating properly that the switch is working properly by lifting it up and then closing it again.

When you are having another one of those no-heat situations check for 110 volts AC between terminal 3 of motor (red wire) and terminal 4, (nuetral) of motor (whit or gray wire, not sure)

If so then you have a bad centifuge switch in the motor.

damper switch was checked ....also replaced the RAM ignitior.

didn't check the motor or thermostat however...will have to do that..

I've had problems like these with my dryers from day one. SQ won't admit they're flawed. I've had two independent techs tell me that the computer boards are extremely susceptable to stray static electricity causing the ignition sequence to not light. Opening and closing the door or damper usually resets the ignition sequence. There's no excuse for this in a dryer.

Did you replace the lead wire and sparker from the RAM unit also?

They sense heat and make the RAM work.

Does anyone here know if anybody makes a "mechanical" (ie. not electronic) stacked dryer ?

(sometimes the old ways are the best !)

By mechanical do you mean timer/coin? Yes you can get the alliance stack with the old style manual greenwald timer.

Does this mean no "processor" inside ? (computer board)
(ie. the part that D&E repairs for $30.)

Does anyone know if this eliminates all the problems this machine has ?

In the dryer(s) that I posted the link, yes there isn't a computer. However there is small temp control board.

D & E does the boards for $30? That is cheap. I have not sent anything to them for awhile, no particular reason, well, I have not had to.. but the last few I sent to Mountain Veiw, I think becuase D & E does not repair Dexter Rams. (Fenwalls)

Why would you even bother repairing thr fenwals? Get a new ignition box for 30 bucks or less.

I could not find replacement for less than $75 at that time. I know better now.

When you start the dryer, check for 120v at the blue wire at the spark board thats the middle wire.If you have 120v there, you should get spark. If not,the board is bad.If it sparks and it doesn't light, its a gas valve problem.iIf no 120v then check t'stats or centrifugal switch like mike said.As a retired service guy, these dryers kept me in business!
