I have several frontloaders that for one reason or another do not have restrictors in the hose to the softener box. I have tried inserting smaller tubes inside the larger hose to slow the flow, and have tried using a hose clamp to constrict the hose... all with less than perfect results. Any ideas?

Why not buy the proper restrictor?

What type of machine do you have? Typically the restrictor is built into the valve. Either they are missing or worn out, or you have some pretty strong pressure.

The machines are Wascomat 184s, with no restrictor built into the valve. Can one be added? Where can you get them, and how are they "sized"?

Is it a 3 way valve or 2 way? 110 volt or 220 volt?
For between $15 and $20 bucks you can repalce the valve.
They come with the restrictor built in.

I had the same problem with an older w184. I put a ball valve on the hose and adjusted the pressure down.

restrictors are available from wascomat.. The two coil valve used in the W 74 & 124 is not the same part for the W184. You can add the proper restrictor to this valve. On a W74 & w124 the 3 coil valve injects the softner compartment. the softner port has a restrictor pressed into the outlet nipple.
