View Full Version : Dryer coin Mech
I have a Coin mech on one of my dryers that when you put the quarter in it turns , but seems to be slipping and not turning the cam. There seems to be a white ring that my be worn. Can that be replaced or is something else causing the problem? Also problem #2 - one of my dryers won't shut off once in a while. The lite stays on and the push button will turn the drum. Sometimes it may stay on for an houir then go off. The dryer will run and heat for the time the customer puts quarters in for, but it will run longer without heat. It seems as though the cam wheel is not pushing down the switch to shut the light off. Which screw do I need to tighten down, or is there another suggestion?
Thanks,
BWJR

When my dryers keep running I just replace the timing motor located in the coin drop mechanism. I assume the motor stops and does not advance the 'gears' to shut it off.

There are two on the Greenwald timer. The one in the back controls how much cool down. The one in the middle of the mechanism controls the motor. Turn, to the right, the inside one a half a turn at a time until it works properly.
Thank You David. I wasn't sure which screw to turn down. I'll let you know what the results are when i'am finished. What about my other problem in regards to turning the knob and nothing. Then when I turn the knob real fast the lite comes on, the dryer runs and the customer gets the accumulated time from the first quarter. sometimes when the next quarter is put in, ( quarter # 3 ), the lite goes off and the dryer stops. Any suggestions.
Thanks,

Those Greenwell timer has been the same for 30 years. They cost only $40 when I start this biz 13 years ago.
The A switch is the run switch, the B switch is the cool dowm switch.
If your timer turn on by itself or run too long.
1,check your A switch. It is the one without arm and close to the back. The one hard to get to.
You can turn the little screw to adjest time a little, disconnect / turn off the power before you do that!Screw in 1/2-1 turn then try again.
2,change your motor,I would try adjest A switch first.
3,use meter check the A switch, they go bad too.
The B switch is for cool down,it is the one with arm, some older Dryers(before 1970) don't have one or not in used.Must people don't care about the cool down anyway.
Beesmart sell a little book about those timer, cost $2,3 dollars, they also rebuild them.I bought their book 10 years ago, have not had them rebuild any for me.I rebuild them myself,it is pain to fully rebuild them.
Set -o-Matic sell the kit convert them to digital counter it is nice but they cost $150-160 a dryer. It is not really a plug in and play, take 1/2-1 hour for each dryer.

I'm not real sure.
Make sure the center rotating plate has two springs. Sometimes they will break the hook and fall off. If the action feels a little spongy, this might be it.
Sometimes I've had the z-shaped coin stop to get bent a little. This prevents the quarter from swinging all the way over before dropping. On mine, it caused coin jams. It also allows nickels :(
As I said the timer is 30 years old design,Greenwell add cooldown B switch in the 70s,nothing change much.It is pain to get it work right somtimes.
I suggest you buy a little book from Beesmart, cost $2 or 3 dollar.
It has most info you need for the timer. It is hard to describe about the timer without any pictures.
If the timer work right,it will take nickels and other coin but it should not start the timer,it will kick coin just outside coin enter point, not in the box.I always find a lot dimes, nickels next to my coin entry but not start the dryers.
Ken,
I wanted to get back to you and let you know that one full turn on the A switch did the trick. The dryer now shuts off properly.
Thanks,

Does any one have info how to test just the switches and timers?
I have a box of 10 that came with the mat and want to see what part of the timer is busted. Also, how much is an average cost for bee smart to fix a timer?
You need a meter ($4-200)to check the switch, don't know how much beesmart charge, those timer cost from $60-90 new.
Cheapest way :buy one of their $3 book rebuild them yourself.

Using an ohm meter, check for continuity. Switches are usually good or bad. If you don't feel any detent (or click), but the switch still tests good, it's only a matter of time before it fails.
I sent several to BeeSmart. I asked them to "replace the face plate with new one", but they didn't. They simply replaced it with another used plate. And the repaired timers DID work properly.
I keep a couple of switches and springs onhand to repair problems.
The timer motor either works or it doesn't. I used an lamp cord and put terminal ends on the match the mate of the timer to power the timer on the table. The it's just a matter of watching your watch and adjusting the switches.

I purchased the book. I can rebuild them, but just want to see if one has a bad A and another has a bad B can I put the to together to build a spare. Currently, I have 1 spare new and 10 old ones that I want to rebuild.

Yes you can.
I have found that is is just not worth the time or effort to fix the greenwald mechs except if it is the switch, motor or spring plate that is bad.
I would rather install a new unit than play with a bad unit hoping that it is fixed to have it fail shortly thereafter.
The Greenwell timer design is over 30 years old,I used to like them since I can rebuild them and I spent a lot time in my stores. After I got some computer dryers,I hate the Greenwell timer now,I still have 48 or 50 dryers with Greenwell timers in service.I always need to do a little adjestment ,even the new one.If you have dryers with Greenwell timer,I will suggest you check them once a week or more,I had a few moters or A switch fail ,the dryers will be free dry, most customers won't tell you.
