I think the model is an HCV 35Lb washer 2 years old. The belt broke, and I was trying VERY hard to change the damn thing. It should not be so freaking difficult. From what I understand the motor must be lifted in order for the belt to be replaced, when the belt has broken the motor moves down. I tried, and tried, wedge tools and anything else I could find to lift the motor up. I did all of this behind the machine, and still couldn't get it up (NO comments......) I also understand that the belt can be changed from the front of the machine and for the life of me I could not do it, anyway at all. What the hell was I doing wrong???

Kitty, if we are talking about the same machine.....The belt change is from the rear. Put a small prybar under the motor and lift against the spring tension. Put the belt (3v830) on the motor pulley first. (just lift the motor enough that you can slip the belt on the motor pulley so that the frame doesn't interfere. When the belt is on the motor pulley, run it onto the cylinder pulley by turning the pulley by hand. Watch for sharp edges !!

Kitty, it sounds like someone is not eating their Wheaties! As Tony said, get the belt on the motor first and then use the leverage of the big pully to pull it onto itself. Its all a matter of leverage and should not require much physical force.

If I am looking at the rear of the machine the spring is on my left? Correct? I tried to put something in there but could not lift it high enough to get the belt on. However I was trying to lift directly in the center of the motor where the bottom of the belt goes, was this my error? Should I have been lifting from the left?

Im no wimp.....but this has been extrememly difficult for me. I tried to place the belt on the motor pulley first and pull up and rotate the belt onto the wheel, NO can do........needless to say I am frustrated and my back is killing me from trying!!!!!!!!!
I really hate it, but I may have to submit to the fact that on occassion men are needed in some capacities. This may be one of those needs??

Kitty, Put the pry bar in the center of the motot. The bar should be sticking out to the left. Unser the motor the bar is going to be touching the floor. If your machine is on a steel base you will need to put a block under the motor so that you have a pivot point
Good luck, Tony.

I love that last statement.....Good Luck......
I think I will wait for the teacher paricipation and maybe I will learn the trick to lifting this motor! It is probably much less difficult than the sweat and curses I put into this, but hell, I tried! I think I will take my holiday, with my tail between my legs and hit the pool! Ciao! Thanks. Kitty
Kitty I don't know if these are similar to the 4 year old models I have but if they are open the top, take the new belt hook it around the motor pulley at the bottom of the cabinet, then start to feed the belt onto the big pulley on whichever end is easier to work on and when you get to the point at which you can't stretch anymore belt onto the pulley hold the belt onto the pulley with one hand and turn the pulley with the other hand as the pulley turns it will feed the remaining belt onto itself.
I hope this is relevent if not good luck.

I know how to put a belt on, if I could simply lift the motor up I could get it on. My problem is lifting the motor, I am not weak by any means but it is hard to lift the motor and keep it up while trying to put the belt on too. I could never get the motor high enough to completely get the belt on.
Why praytell do they manufacture the machine to make a simple belt replacement so difficult? I know BD has said he has had to lift the motor and wedge something under it in order to change the belt, why would this be a good way to deal with a simple maintanence issue? It still irritates me I was unable to do it!!!

Kitty, I think that the problem you are having is that the motor pulley is right on top of the frame. If this is the case, and you can't lift the motor to create a space for the belt, then ........make a wedge, (a block of 2 x4 or 4 x4 ) and tap it under the left side of your pry bar. You only need to lift the motor an inch, so that you can fit the belt onto the motor pulley. Once you have the belt on the motor pulley, turn it onto the cylinder pulley. I've run accross a lot of the Unimacs where the motor pulley is right on top of the frame rail. Don't feel dishartened it can be more difficult than it would seem. Hope this helps.....Tony

Kitty, all these posts assume that the motor is not frozen...??

kitty how are you
most important part put on a pair of gloves.
turn off the circut breaker for the machine
we are looking at the back of your machine.
look at the motor.
do you see the fins on the motor?
place a small pry bar between one of the fins and the frame.
pry upward just enuogh to get the belt under the small pulley.
put the belt on the left side of the large pulley.
turn the large pulley clockwise till it is tight
now with gloves on.
grab the large pulley like a steering wheel an turn it clockwise.
the belt should feed on and your done

My suggestion would be to unhook the spring, then lift the motor enough to clear the belt through the pulley and frame, then reattach the spring and 'run' the belt onto the tub pulley.

I had to get a man to do it............ Damn it!

It really must be time for you to eat those Wheaties!!! Was it really just a strength issue, that seems very odd.

I am strong, I swear it! But I could not for the life of me raise that freaking motor! I used everything to wedge the motor up so I could follow through with the belt, but I could not get it up! After the belt was on correctly the motor had actually been raised by several inches! It was difficult to say the least!

Just wait until the motor bearings fail and you have to lift the motor out of the machine! A fun job...

OK, what am I missing here? I'm no weight lifter and I pickup the motors on my 35# wascos with one hand. Do these machines have significantly larger motors?
