Kitty,
Try these links to the US Census:
http://www.census.gov/main/www/access.html
http://www.census.gov/main/www/cen2000.html
There is a ton of info there.

If your need for demographics is because of a location you are considering, the best start is to check with your post office. The post office can tell you exactly how many apartment rentals there are in a zip code.
If they won't cooperate, go to a mass mailer/printer. Ask him how much it would cost to mail a one page flyer (no envelope) to all rentals (in whatever zip code you are interested in). Have him breakdown the cost by postage, printing, and addressing/folding.
If your need is just for a school paper, research "US Census" using the Google search engine.

Kitty, I have been spending time on the US gov one. It is a little "bulky" untill you figure some things out.
One tip would be to find the map of your area, and write down the census tracts and blocks. Then when you search, search tract or block, and you will know what ones to put in.
It takes some time to learn it.

What were the 'rule-of-thumb' percentages for estimating income?
Pete, I think you stated these once before, but I can't seem to find them on the board anymore.

Can anyone recommend a good way to get demographics for an out of state location?
I live in Mass. and looking at an area in Florida.
I have contacted the local Chamber of Commerce and the SCORE chapter, but no help.
Thanks!!

The CLA has them at a decent price. Also, you can go to the US cenus page and see them for for free, but maybe not the way you want, ie, distance from a location.

I reeived an e-mail from the CLA. Do they require to be a member in order to purchase demographics from them?
I've checked out the census site. The numbers are limited.
Thanks!!

I get my demo for free from my distrib, but having no relationship you may not get this, CLA, and yes, I think you need to be a member to get discounted services.
