About a year and half ago I had a fire that destroyed my store. After rebuilding it an reopening I have a woman who is claiming that she had approx. $500 in clothing that was destroyed along with the store. I have no way of determing what she really lost if anything. The insurance company says that any items belonging to customers are not covered. Any suggestions on how to handle this claim? I have a card system and though about offering her a prepaid $100 wash card.

A year and a half ago, and she is just telling you this now? Yea, right - tell her to take a walk.

Explain to the customer that this is an unexpected loss and you are not responsible. Can he/she provide sufficient verifiable proof that they do their laundry consistently on certain day of they week (when the fire happened)? Do you have a sign that spells out "Not responsible for loss" -- however,if she is a regular and valued customer to you, I'll definitely work out a compromise (20 -25 cents to a dollar).

On this one I would agree with E&R. However if she is not a regular go Kirbys route.

Did you give her a claim slip?

Does she have it?

Sounds fishy to me.
