View Full Version : Confessions of a newbie!

I would first like to thank all of the folks who have given me sage advice during the last 1-1/2 years that I have participated on this forum, especially Kitty, Howard, Pete F, Kitty and many others. Sorry if I left someone out, but I am a bit tired.

I opened my new mat 3-1/2 weeks ago and it has been a blast. I listened to everything that I have heard and read and took the best ideas that suited my situation. So far, so good!!

Now for the eye opening part for anyone who is looking to get into this business:

1- I spent almost 2 years full-time trying to find an existing mat or a location for a new mat that would meet my criteria.

2- I spent 9 months full-time (including nights and weekends) supervising the planning and construction of my mat.

3- I have not had a full day off in about 6 months.

I am enjoying every minute of this so far, but it is certainly not for everyone.
Note that my place is completely new, including the building. I have had false alarms, bra wires in drains, screws jammed in washers and dryers, crayons and candy in dryers staining people's clothing and about every basic complaint that you may have read here. Oh yes, and both of my Card Machines have had their bill acceptors jammed.

Note also that everything is under a full warranty now, but you can't wait on a Sunday afternoon for the mechanic to arrive, especially if it means losing revenue on your busiest day.

I used to laugh before when I went to some distributor's seminars and they called it an absentee business that you only have to show up to to collect.
Now it is really being driven home.

This business has gotten so competitive that you have to be involved and you have to take advantage of every possible opportunity to increase your market share and / or keep your competition at bay.

One last bit. I told you folks a while back about a small, neglected mat down the block from me that closed down the week before I opened. Well, someone bought it and cleaned it up a bit. They definitely didn't do their homework and they are suffering for it miserably. Their last wash is 9:00 PM, but it was lights out at 6:00 PM last Saturday!

Good luck to you all and to you newbies - DO YOUR HOMEWORK!!

Remember how much $$$ and time and effort is at stake before you commit to something and don't be shy about asking about anything that concerns you and get everything in writing. The cost of the business may be the least of your obligations. The cost of the lease can easily exceed that over time and you have to be damn sure that the business can cover it.

All,

Thanks for the kind words! I've been going in for 5 minutes a day just to collect :-)

Arniecon,

I am not charging a deposit, offering a bonus, free dry or wash. I have sent out about 30K coupons and the local grocery has handed out about 10K more. I handed out about 1K personally. I wanted to do a "soft" opening and only do a big grand opening deal if it was necessary. I also wanted to fully test everything before I got overloaded. I have had no major problems to speak of, yet!

The CCI System has operated flawlessly. Out of 101 card readers, 2 were defective and were replaced with no problem. The soap vendor is working flawlessly. I am a huge fan of CCI and would recommend it highly at this point.

If anyone has any questions about CCI, feel free to submit them. Note that about 99.99% of customers are thrilled about the system. The fact that they don't have to carry quarters has been a big selling point.

Only 1 person refused to use the system because of the card and she had only 3 foam-backed rugs, so no loss there.

Stay tuned,

Mark

Great going Mark, glad is working well....

Why must you go into collect if you are on the card system? Too much money in the stacker? A good thing......

Kitty,

Just joshing. I actually don't collect everyday, but you can bet that I spend a tad more than 5 minutes in the mat.

We had a big weekend.....Daves, wifes sister got married, and we were all in the wedding. The parties started Thursday and ran through to late yesterday. I am extremely exhausted. But I will be heading to the mats this afternoon for several hours of necessary work.........

We made every possible back up in the busiest store, and I have yet to get a call about any changers or such, maybe there is hope that we will have luck when we go to VEGAS and I can make the changers last! However, I did get the 8am call about the Saturday/Sunday employee, quitting yesterday afternoon. Good riddance to that smuck any way. Luckily we have a store employee that is very loyal and dependable she came in and is doing what is necessary.

This store is very busy on the weekends and we have tried to cover the shift with 2 people. But, every time that we hire a second, both employees don't even equal to one. We kept hearing that this guy didn't feel the pay was sufficient....he wasn't either. The business is busy on the weekends. Does anyone pay more on the busier shifts? We continuly are having a problem staffing the weekend shift in this one store. Any ideas?

Mark...I was thinking of doing a targeted mailing of free cards with a free wash and dry pre-credited to the cards....Does this make sense? What did you offer on the coupons?

Arniecon,

I thought about mailing cards, but it is cost prohibitive as far as I was concerned.

You have two issues:

-The cost of the cards that may never get used and,

- The added weight to the mailing.

The mailing included a coupon for a free wash and soap (box o Tide). If someone redeems the coupon (attendant has to start machine), they have to get a card and pay for dry time. This serves two purposes - it gets them to try the card, and I make a few cents off the dry. This alone can pay for the cost of the card. It is a relatively low customer acquisition cost.

If you hand out the cards, you may get a better response rate. I didn't try this.

I think people go for the free deal whether it is a coupon or laundry card and the coupon costs next to nothing if it goes unused.
